Slow news week here at the office, so I'm trying to get things updated and caught up.We're an all Dell hardware shop, and no previous admin has ever gotten iDRAC setup on any of this hardware.I'm trying to rectify that by learning about iDRAC and how to centrally monitor everything. If my understanding is correct, iDRAC is a BIOS level monitor of hardware statistics that can be polled even when the server/OS is turned off, correct?Since I have multiple machines, I'd rather not have to worry about numerous iDRAC IP portals to go to, but manage them from one window. So I installed the OpenManage Enterprise VM appliance. I have that online and ready, however, When I try to scan for devices, I get failures and no results.I feel I'm missing an elementary piece to all of this. Of course, there needs to be an ethernet plugged into the maintenance/wrench port on back of the server. But do I need to down these servers individually and set up iDRAC before I can add them to OME? I was hoping not.

The iDRAC settings are configured in the BIOS and by default have a statically assigned IP address at 192.168.1.20 I believe. IF you IP subnet is different, and you have not assigned IP's to your iDRAC systems on your subnet, then your scans will never find them. You need configure the iDRAC IP's and then your appliance should be able to find them and pull them in.You should also be able to configure the iDRAC settings via the Dell OMSA if you have it installed as well so as to not have to reboot the server and configure through the BIOS. The port should literally say idrac near it on the server if it has one. You can set the IP in OSMA like you did. You have to save changes etc to make sure it takes and comes up.The other thing is.

Is your network complex at all like different vlans? You need to make sure you are plugged into the right vlan on your switch if so.Outside of that, make sure your DEFAULT GATEWAY and subnet mask setting for the idrac static IP is actually correct.Lastly make sure you have idrac set to actually use the dedicated idrac port. It can be set to share another network port or told to use dedicated.

I had an issue recently where it was set to use shared lom for some reason and I had to change that. The best to describe an iDrac card is that it's a little server inside the server that's always on as long as the power is connected. It's a small linux server running some services.Iirc the IP's default to a 192.168.xx address if there is no dhcp reply. So if you connected the powersupply of the servers before connecting them to the network they most likely have no IP.I have no experience with OpenManage Enterprise - please let me know if you get it working and get all the dracs in 1 environment. I've been sort-of looking at it myself, but never had time to set it up / try it out. I have to say that I've tried to set up OMSA about 4 different times. WORK.I've followed every tutorial and help file.

BUT IT DOES NOT WORK.I feel like I'm missing some basic concept here. Maybe so basic I cannot grasp it?Many things in the OME/OMSA thing are bothersome.I set up a list of discovery actions- impossible to delete ANY of them. IT DOES NOT WORK.Literally NOTHING works, other than the setting up of discovery IP ranges, and then it DOES NOT DISCOVER ANYTHING.I just don't get it. I really don't.
